Starting a website is the hardest part of a website. It's hard to get your visitors coming, but when they do come, it can be found that it's not as hard to get more. Assuming you already know how to code a website layout and know a lot about HTML, follow the following steps in order.
Step 1 Create a layout that reflects your style and will impress visitors. The first impression of your website is its layout. If you have a bad layout, visitors won't want to continue visiting your site, because your layout shows what you are capable of. Your layout should be your best design.
Step 2 Create a page for a page for a blog, on your index page. This is where your updates should be, and if you like, a blog about your life.
Step 3 Create a "Content" page. Your content page will have all the links to your different types of content in it. You will add these pages later.
Step 4 Create a "Site" or "Domain" page. Make sure in side of this page to have a "Contact Me" page. Some ideas to also have is a "Link Back" page with all your buttons that link back to your site, an "Affiliate" page that will allow a link exchange between you and other sites, an "About Me" or an "About the Site" page, and later you can add a "Past Layouts" page that show your past layouts that you had on the site.
Step 5 Add tons of content. Make what you are best at, and take time making your content. If you add 30 icons that are all horrible, it's not going to be as effective as 3 amazing ones. Remember, you want people to use what you make, because they will link back to you.
Step 6 Join a topsite. Depending on what type of site you are will change what type of topsite you join. Topsites will let you track how many visitors you are getting, and later, once you get closer to the top, will bring in some unique visitors.
Step 7 Make even more content. You should try to make a few things a day, or one amazing thing. Before you try to get more visitors, you should make sure you have tons of things to offer, that way they will come back again and again.
Step 8 A few days after you joined the topsite, and you unique visitors are starting to average out (if you have any at all) apply for affiliation or link exchange with sites that get 10-15 more unique visitors than you do, or maybe a little more. Don't apply at sites that get a lot more than you, because it's rude. Try not to apply with people getting less than you though, because then they are taking yours.
The key to get a successful website is to be an active owner and add content like crazy!
