Host Your Own Website In 3 Easy Steps
It’s very simple in this day and age to host your own website. It’s just a matter of learning from the right person what it takes…and you are at the right place!!
Maybe you’ve been told by people before that they will host a website for you. This is expensive. You don’t have control over any aspect of it. You have to rely on other people. It’s not complicated to “do it yourself”, yet not really have to do too much in the process.
We aren’t talking about hosting your own website on a computer that you have in your house as the server. If you are a technical person and think you can keep your security tight enough, then by all means do it. But for the rest of us out there, we just want a cheap way to host our own website without relying on other people.
Wouldn’t it be great if you could choose a hosting company that would allow you to host as many websites as you want for a fee of less than $10 per month? Well that’s an extremely easy proposition these days.
The only thing left is to learn how to host a website in a few easy steps as soon as you purchase the plan.
Step 1) Purchase the Right Plan- This is the most important step. If you are planning on hosting more than one website, then you’ll want to get a plan that allows you to host “unlimited” domains. These plans allow you to host as many websites as you want, with as much disk space as you want, and using as much bandwidth as you want.
You can purchase a plan that is a “shared” plan, a dedicated server plan, or a reseller plan. For most beginners, a shared plan is a perfect choice. The website you are looking at right now is on a shared plan. If you get more involved in making websites, have a larger website that needs more security, or have more robust needs, then you’ll want to look into a reseller plan or dedicated plan.
Step 2) Point Your Name Servers For Your Domain (DNS)- This is the first semi-confusing step that most people go through as soon as they purchase a hosting plan, or purchase a domain name.
Firstly, you want to purchase a domain name. You want to name your site. A good thing to keep in mind is that if you have the keyword in the domain, then it may help your website rank higher in search engine results when someone types in that keyword. For example: If I had a website about Goat Hair Sweaters, then a good idea would be to buy a domain name called www.GoatHairSweaters.com.
Okay, now that we have the domain name, you need to point the DNS (domain name servers) to your hosting account. So either…
– Get the “Domain Name Server” names from your hosting account. If you can’t figure this out, call customer service. They will easily get you the DNS names in seconds. Then go into the account where you got your domain name and “Change Name Servers”. Put in the DNS names that you get from your hosting company, and voila. You are done.
-OR simply buy the domain name from your new hosting company! Your DNS settings will already be set up correctly.
Step 3) Put the Website Files Into Your Directory- If you already have a website built, then get the files from wherever you have them, and upload them into the domain file directory using an FTP program. You can download a free FTP program from the web such as Filezilla for windows or Cyberduck for Mac.
